PAINTING IN TIME: PART 2
August 30—December 3
Reception: Friday, September 23, 6:00–9:00 p.m.
@ Sullivan Galleries, 33 S. State St., 7th floor

Following a first iteration of the exhibition at The Tetley, Leeds in 2015, Painting in Time: Part Two explores the relationship between time and contemporary painting. The artists in this cross-generational, international exhibition destabilize the idea of painting as a static object. Paintings will be produced by machines, performed, choreographed, instructionalized, staged as films, encourage spectator participation, evolve throughout the exhibition, and be presented as events.

Artists include: Polly Apfelbaum, Paola Cabal, Susie Choi, Debo Eilers, Dylan Fish, Kate Hawkins, Robert Chase Heishman and Megan Schvaneveldt, Natasha Kidd, Rob Leech, Billy McGuinness, Jaclyn Mednicov, Sanjana Mehra, Lisa Milroy, Yoko Ono, Sophia Padgett Perez, Jeremy Sublewski, Maryam Taghavi, and Vincent Tiley. The exhibition will have a second phase beginning in early November, when works by artists Kayla Cook and Cindy Zhang will join the show.

PAINTING IN TIME
CO-CURATED BY SARAH KATE WILSON
THE TETLY, LEEDS UK
3 APRIL – 5 JULY 2015
LAUNCH 2 APRIL, 6-8PM

Exhibiting artists include Polly Apfelbaum, Claire Ashley, Kate Hawkins, Robert Chase Heishman and Megan Schvaneveldt, Natasha Kidd, Rob Leech, Lisa Milroy, Yoko Ono, Hayley Tompkins, Jessica Warboys and Sarah Kate Wilson.

This visually stunning group show brings together an exciting array of works by international artists practicing within the expanding field of painting. Exploding ideas of what painting can be, these artists work across sculpture, performance, painting and film. The exhibition includes inflatable paintings, painting machines and paintings that can be handled and reassembled by visitors.

Painting in Time consists of works that are in a state of flux: pieces will constantly evolve and in some cases only exist for the lifespan of the exhibition. New commissions sit alongside existing works reconfigured for The Tetley’s unique gallery spaces.

This exhibition acknowledges the enduring popularity of the medium and asks ‘what constitutes painting today?

READY (March 25-27)
Ready and not. Read-y, ready, readiness, already and made, the works in this hour long program explore, report, introduce, rework, sing and travel through notions of preparation and repair, lives and deaths, the mysterious and the ill-conceived, bowling with no pins and reading in the 21st century. See: sustainable sourcing commingled with speculative speakings, languid landscapes, cartoons and paintings. Hear: Tull, Paterra, “JT”. The questions are wry and show and here.
